Magicianhood and Providence

Depending on your tradition and flavor of magick and mysticism, you are likely to come across the concept of Divine Providence. Each person’s understanding of and relationship with Divine Providence (“DP”) varies. In the system of Franz Bardon, one inferred intention with magickal development is the ability to then become an agent of DP. To utilize your honed abilities and skill set to usher out work prescribed to you. Several esoteric traditions pay heed to the relationship between the spiritually evolved man on earth and a higher calling. I was inspired to write out one path to prepare and align magicians with this objective.

Accountability & Responsibility

First, take accountability and responsibility for your life. Take a good look around. Is your life in shambles or decent shape? Where are your failings? Do you have wrongs to correct? Are you taking care of the things on your plate? Take accountability for what you have done to date, the good and the bad. Establish your ethos and resolve to do your best going forward. Be responsible for what your current assignments are, be it to pay the bills, take care of your family, take care of yourself, counsel friends in need, etc. If there’s things to fix and rearrange, do so.

You must first begin with the lot you have been given. If you can’t handle what is currently in your domain of responsibility, you can’t be expected to take on bigger assignments. You establish your capacity to handle bigger and bigger work by thoroughly attending to whatever your current obligations are.

Thoroughly assess through reflection, meditation, discernment and prayer even what you are meant to give and receive in your current earthly state. The receiving aspect is not what to expect others to give to you, but the acknowledgment that each life situation provides an opportunity to learn lessons, grow, develop mastery and contribute to the best possible outcome. It is the first step to begin removing yourself from exclusively pursuing self-interest (the impulses of the lower self), which brings me to the next point.

Service and Humility

To be an “agent” of DP requires a spirit of service and humility. First, to be an “agent” does not mean you are going to be some secret James Bond character taking out evil crime bosses all around the world. It could, but it’s highly unlikely. You’re more likely to discover a humble calling in your local community, for the people in your day-to-day, undertakings in your profession, etc. The work to be discharged in known creation is vast. Sentient beings at large are fulfilling some task or objective. Even monks abiding in enlightenment are fulfilling an objective. If you have heightened capacity to make a meaningful contribution, which comes about from magickal development, then DP, through its omni-traits, will recruit and assign you to what you are best suited for.

To be of service requires genuine awe and appreciation for what you consider as your Higher, be it Jesus, Buddha, Shiva, Providence in general, etc. A term I learned in the 4th Way/Gurdjieff tradition is to cultivate your inner steward. For all the competing interests in life, if magick and this path is front and center for you, then you need to hone the aspect of yourself that will take charge (again, responsibility). That is the steward. The steward, however, is a servant. He is preparing the house for the master to arrive and as such, must have a humble spirit that is service-oriented, much like a devout butler in the large estates of old.

Humility in the face of DP is multifaceted. One, it allows space for higher inspiration and communication to take place. Two, it means no task is too small or too big for you to endeavor towards or undertake. You are willing to rise to whatever the occasion may be. Three, humility sustains harmonious flow and order between your incarnated self and your Holy Guardian Angel/Higher Self/Holy Daimon.

Parting Notes

Divine Providence is said to decide if and when to open the gates, which for the incarnated individual is done through a center in the head. Should aspiration towards working with and on behalf of DP be on your agenda, the above are preliminary steps to prepare and position yourself towards that aim. In the words of Matthew 25:6, But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’
