Creative visualization, inner clairvoyance, dreams, memory and mental wandering. That’s a mouthful, even after taking out “imagination.” 😉 Yet, they’re all words whose substance can weave together and they present a string that pulls you along a trajectory towards certain aims.
First, for disclosure’s sake I’d like to point out that when one is working on skills and practices in one vein, to also take into consideration having a “well balanced diet.” For example, if one focused solely on skills and undertakings in the fire domain without also introducing water, air and earth element practices, at some point you may find yourself experiencing the symptoms of extreme one-sided development. These can be difficult to backtrack from and rectify, sometimes taking years. Be mature and remember to cultivate groundedness, harmony, balance, etc.
Now, back to the subject at hand. I’ve been turning over in my mind, like taking an amethyst stone in one’s palm, turning it over and over again to study then putting it up into the sunlight to watch its light reflect, the various practices that cultivate one’s creative visualization, inner clairvoyance and eventual mental wandering. I found some recurring themes that I wanted to put to paper for readers. Namely, how one can start small and build an empire from the first pebble.
Dreams

Let’s begin with the realm of dreams. If you are someone who cannot remember your dreams and would like to, please send me a message and we can chat. I once created a Facebook group where I did dream interpretation for over 250 members, and I helped activate dream recall for a friend who could not remember her dreams.
If you’re wondering where all of this is leading, stay with me and it will start to make sense. If the words in the title speak to you, first start with journaling your dreams. The dreamworld is a place where one is visualizing, imagining, and sometimes mental wandering. Your inner clairvoyance is perceiving the dreamscapes that unfold. With any foray outside of the concrete, physical world, what good is it if you can’t recall what happened? Get into the practice of journaling your dreams.
What I often do is, upon waking, to recall the dreams and review their details over and over again in my mind to solidify the memory recall of what occurred. I then go make a cup of coffee and sit down to journal my dreams. Sometimes, later in the day I’ll see something that triggers a dream I had forgotten about then will go journal it. Many advise to keep your dream journal next to your bed and write them down first thing. Decide what approach is best for you. If your eventual goal is mental wandering, which we will get to, you need to be able to recall and write down in detail the landscapes and experiences you have. Dream journaling is a fabulous introduction to taking visions unfolding and documenting the order of events that occurred.
Creative Visualization

Before mental wandering, which all of this is leading up to, work your creative visualization muscle. This may be difficult to do at first, so begin with being a passive participant in creative visualization. Check out Youtube videos where you can listen to someone else’s voice and them leading you through a creative visualization experience. One example is Unlock Your Full Potential – A 10 Minute Guided Visualization for Success & Confidence. The benefit of listening to creative visualization meditations from others is that you do not need to generate the scene, journey or unfolding of events. The voice is prompting you for what the imagination needs to immerse itself into next. This is a safe way to start acquainting yourself with creative visualization and not needing to put forth much effort. You can just listen in and go along with the flow.
A very popular book for familiarizing oneself with this art is Creative Visualization: Use the Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Your Life by Shakti Gawain. There are a plethora of methods to begin actively working your creative visualization muscle. You can pathwork the Kabbalah Tree of Life. You can create memory palaces (look up Method of Loci). You can sit where ever you might be, look around taking in the scenery and objects, then close your eyes to see how much you can recall. One practice I was taught was to do standing zen for 20 minutes and try to hold the image of a rose in front of my open eyes.
For instances of creative visualization where a story or event is unfolding, journal it. Your dreams and waking creative visualization exercises so far have been working your inner clairvoyance muscle. It’s kind of moot if you don’t journal it, however, for although it may to real and tangible in the present and you think you won’t forget it, you very likely will after going to wash the dishes and petting the dog.
Mental Wandering

Aspects of mental wandering include having worked your inner clairvoyance muscle and being able to recall your memories. There is a variety of methods for mental wandering. This can be considered unsafe or simply inaccessible if one has not worked up to a certain point in their magical development. Read Initiation into Hermetics by Franz Bardon for some insight. Like many magical skills, however, some people just have a natural ability and knack for some things. I’ve met clairvoyants who don’t do any magical practice in their life, for example.
My favorite instruction for magical wondering is Mental Wandering: Intelligence Gathering and the Real OBE by SixtySkills on Udemy. I started with this proscribed technique, which gave me the training ground to then come into my own technique for mental wandering. When you begin mental wandering, take good notes and journal. Write down all you see, your experiences, etc. These will become memories you can go back to and read later. Additionally, sometimes things make more sense or provide insight at a future point in time. The sage adage is if you come across another being while mental traveling (or in invocation or evocation), to not speak until you are spoken to.
Just like recalling your dreams and creative visualizations, it may take a little bit at first to work the energy. Keep at it. Give yourself directives for where to go, or see what naturally unfolds. It’s suggested one begins such exercise with a magical circle or some type of magical protection ritual.
Conclusion

Creative visualization, inner clairvoyance, dreams, memory and mental wandering. They are cousins that reinforce one another, connected and structurally supporting one another. Start on the first floors of creative visualization and dreams, working your inner clairvoyance and letting memory become your familiar. One way to show you are paying attention and care is by journaling. These cornerstones then give you the badge to gain the rooftop access of mental wandering.
